5 Questions With… Rob Weisberg

Rob Weisberg is the CEO of Invaluable — a company that supplies over 20,000 estate and art auctioneers worldwide with solutions including auction listings, online bidding, websites and auction management.

Question 1: How do you define ‘digital strategy’?

“Digital strategy encompasses everything from brand building to customer lifetime value and driving traffic. As an eCommerce company, at Invaluable, our digital strategy is our business strategy.

We must identify sought after auction merchandise at any one of 24,000 Auction Houses around the world and notify the individual who is passionate about it. Marrying these passionate buyers with these one-of-a-kind items is a significant undertaking. Without a strong rooted digital strategy, it would be impossible to accomplish.”

Question 2:  As the CEO at a digital company, what keeps you up at night?

“My goal is to ensure that every customer who visits Invaluable wants to shout from the rooftops about how great their experience was. To accomplish this, we need to have world-class talent. Even the most complex business hurdles can be overcome with the right team in place. A friend once told me, ‘Life is too short to not work with the people who humble you with their intelligence and drive.’ This is a motto I try to stay true to in our hiring practices.”

Question 3: What kind of mobile device do you have, and what are your three favorite apps?

“Device: iPhone 5

Apps: This is embarrassing, but right now I am addicted to Candy Crush. My wife and kids got me in to it and I find it is the last thing I do before I go to bed at night. My two other favorites are Uber (car service app) and Run Keeper. I am a competitive person so when Run Keeper notifies me about how far a friend just ran or biked, it motivates me to do even more.”

Question 4:  Why should people care about Invaluable?

“People should care about Invaluable because we have 100,000 new items up for auction every day. We house the largest live auction database in the world and the items we help our Auction Houses sell are truly amazing. We can connect you with that diamond in the rough. From Picasso and Monet, to Ming Dynasty pieces to Babe Ruth baseball cards we can find it for you at auction anywhere in the world. With our service, you can find information on past items including product descriptions and condition reports, photographs of the item, how much it was sold for, etc., and we can then track those items down for you.”

Question 5: What advice do you have for aspiring digital professionals?

“The biggest piece advice that I have for aspiring digital professionals would be to immerse yourself in the technology brand that you love. If you are passionate about it, you are bound to work harder. Look at jobs in digital companies that are small enough where they really need you. If you work at a multinational conglomerate, while it may look good on a business card, you are only a tiny piece in that organization. You should wake up every day knowing that you are not just a number, that you matter to the company you are working for and that you are helping them make a difference. At Invaluable, our young team members are drinking straight out of the fire hose but in return, they are learning a lot more.  For us, failure is a badge of honor — if you aren’t swinging for the fences, then you aren’t doing it right!”
