Should there be a board role senior to the CIO? What about the ‘Chief Digital Officer’?

Give the nature of the role and the stereotypes and lack of understanding that many non-technical executives have, the importance of the position can range from essentially what is a glorified IT Manager, simply there as the point of contact for all aspects of basic PC break fix repair,  right through to the CEO’s right hand man in all aspects of strategic planning.

Indeed it struck me that the size of this gulf, and the equally large jump in skills it requires, could even prompt an entirely new role, one intended to represent this board-level capability and sit senior to the CIO – Perhaps a Chief Digital Officer’.”
